Wheatley Street Central Advanced School

"I was very proud the day Mum received a letter stating that I had passed the scholarship to go to Wheatley Street Advanced School.  I carried the letter round all day.

I think it must have been either the 2nd or 3rd year when Jean Lucas brought a biro to school.  For most of us that was the first time we had seen one and by the 4th year we were not allowed to use them.

During the last year of school we were all called into Miss Clews' office one by one and were then asked by here what we intended to do after we left school.  As Mum and Dad were well known in the Co-operative Society through the Co-op guilds, Mum had been told they would always find me a job if I wanted one.  So I told Miss Clews that just to get out of the room as at one time I fancied doing hairdressing but I thought Miss Clews would not approve of that."
