Joyce started as an office junior in the Services Department.  She did a shorthand course at night school.  In her second year she did a day release course at Coventry Technical College, where she had lessons in typing, English and PT in the afternoons. "I really enjoyed the day release classes as it made a change from fetching tea etc etc., but the one draw back was the filing was still waiting for me when I went back to work the next day."

After two years of 'being the general gofer' she was transferred to the Stores, where she typed up goods inwards information and did filing.  She then moved to the Admin. office.

Then she moved to the Production Engineering Department where she was responsible for typing the department head's letters.  She then became the head of the typing pool, until in 1971 the recession led to many redundancies. Joyce was given paid leave in lieu of notice.

She enjoyed playing netball for Courtaulds, when the company had three teams which played in league matches against other factories' teams.
